UN Side Event Held on Taliban’s Restrictions and Violence Against Afghan Women

Farageer, a women-led civil society network, has announced that it is submitting a report to the United Nations Human Rights Council on the “destructive impact of the Taliban’s morality policing laws on the personal and social lives of women in Afghanistan.”
In a statement, the organization said that the report is based on consultations with 200 women from 20 provinces across Afghanistan and is being presented on the sidelines of the 59th session of the Human Rights Council.
According to the statement, the report reflects the lived experiences of women facing restrictions and violence as a result of the implementation of these laws.
Farageer officials stated that the purpose of releasing the report is to draw the international community’s attention to the systematic violations of human rights in Afghanistan and to strengthen global support and solidarity with Afghan women.
The 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council began on Monday, June 16, in Geneva.
In his latest report, Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, stated that the Taliban have systematically suppressed the rights of women and girls by dismantling legal and protective structures.
He emphasized that the Taliban are exploiting legal and judicial systems in Afghanistan as tools to institutionalize oppression, harassment, and gender-based domination.
