Local sources in Nangarhar province report that unidentified gunmen have shot and killed a former Afghan military officer in Hisarak district.

The incident occurred in Koz Asiab village, where assailants opened fire on Nik Mohammad, a former officer of the Afghan National Army (ANA), killing him near his home.

According to the sources, Mohammad had served in the 205th Atal Army Corps in Kandahar during the previous Afghan republic. After the Taliban’s return to power, he left military service and turned to farming.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This killing follows a recent report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), which documented that over the past three months seven former security personnel were killed, eight were arbitrarily detained, and three subjected to torture.

The murder of Nik Mohammad adds to a growing pattern of targeted attacks in Nangarhar and other provinces against former government soldiers and employees, many of whom have been killed or injured under similar circumstances.
