UNICEF: over 500 Afghan children affected by explosive remnants in 2024
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that more than 500 children in Afghanistan were killed or injured by explosive remnants of war in 2024.
In a post on social media platform X, UNICEF stated that these casualties were caused by unexploded ordnance and remnants of conflict. The organization also highlighted its efforts to educate 3 million children and caregivers last year on identifying and reporting explosive materials.
Previously, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reported 455 casualties in Afghanistan in 2023 due to explosive devices.
According to HALO Trust, an international demining organization, Afghanistan remains one of the four most heavily landmine-contaminated countries globally.
