The Taliban’s Supreme Court said it had carried out a public execution in the central stadium of Badghis province earlier this week.

In a statement, the court identified the executed man as Ismail, saying he had shot and killed a man and a woman in the Jund district of the province.

The statement added that the families of the victims had been offered the opportunity to pardon the perpetrator, but after they refused, the punishment of qisas — retribution in kind — was implemented.

According to information compiled by R.M. Media, during their four years in power the Taliban had publicly executed eleven people in the provinces of Farah, Ghazni, Laghman, Jawzjan, Badghis, and Nimroz.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, and the wider international community had repeatedly condemned the Taliban’s use of public executions, but the group continued the practice despite widespread criticism.
