Norway donates $1.8 million to Afghanistan humanitarian fund, OCHA reports
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced that Norway has contributed $1.8 million to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund for 2024. In a statement posted on Sunday, September 8, OCHA revealed that Norway has provided a total of 189 million Norwegian kroner (approximately $17.5 million) to the Afghanistan fund over the past ten years.
This contribution comes at a critical time, as OCHA recently warned of a significant funding shortfall for humanitarian aid in Afghanistan. Only 25% of the requested budget for 2024 has been secured so far, with millions of Afghans in urgent need of assistance. OCHA continues to urge other nations and international organizations to increase their support to help address the growing crisis.
According to OCHA's most recent figures, 23.7 million people in Afghanistan currently rely on humanitarian aid. Norway's donation, while welcomed, highlights the ongoing need for further global financial contributions to alleviate the hardships faced by the Afghan population amidst economic challenges and political instability.
