The Awa Ensemble, a Berlin-based theater group comprised of Afghan women, recently staged the play “A Thousand Stories, One Sorrow.” The performance, held in late July 2025, has been widely praised for its powerful portrayal of Afghan women’s experiences, struggles, and resilience in the face of ongoing crises.

Performed in Persian with German subtitles, the play delves into the challenges and resistance of Afghan women, especially after the fall of Kabul in August 2021. Set in a school in crisis-ridden Kabul, the story follows a group of women seeking refuge. Their memories and narratives unfold through poetic scenes that reflect real-life experiences such as loss, thirst for education, and steadfastness against a patriarchal past.

The production touches on critical themes including denial of education, social pressure, the loss of loved ones, and hope for a better future. By blending realistic and symbolic theatrical techniques, the ensemble conveys both personal and collective stories of Afghan women on stage.

Since its establishment in 2017, the Awa Ensemble has been committed to sharing the narratives of Afghan migrant women through performing arts. “A Thousand Stories, One Sorrow” is part of their ongoing effort to raise awareness about the realities Afghan women face, especially among European and German audiences.
