Norwegian People's Aid Halts Operations in Afghanistan Due to U.S. Aid Suspension
The Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) has announced the suspension of its operations in Afghanistan following the U.S. decision to halt financial aid to the country.
In a statement, NPA said that mine clearance activities, previously supported by the U.S. in Afghanistan and 11 other countries, have been suspended for 85 days.
The organization emphasized that mine clearance efforts play a crucial role in reducing global poverty, improving security, fostering economic growth, and ensuring stability.
NPA stressed that landmines and unexploded ordnance continue to pose a serious threat to people's lives, livelihoods, and development even decades after conflicts have ended.
The organization expressed hope that the new U.S. administration would continue prioritizing this vital work.
According to the statement, NPA plans to engage in discussions with U.S. officials and other key stakeholders to ensure the continuation of efforts toward landmine-free and safe communities.
This development comes as Afghanistan’s Taliban-controlled Ministry of Economy recently stated that 50 organizations have ceased operations in the country following the suspension of U.S. aid.
