Afghan women’s karate team wins silver at Asian Shotokan Championship

The Afghan women’s karate team, composed of Afghan refugees in Iran, secured second place in the 2nd Asian Shotokan Championship, winning three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.

The tournament, held in Tehran from January 22 to 25, featured 1,900 female and 650 male athletes from five countries. Iran claimed first place, while the Afghan women’s team finished as the runner-up.

Gold medals were won by Narges Rezayi, Hania Sedaghat, and Aziza Mohammadi, while Donya Rezayi and Kimia Mohammadi earned silver, and Motahera Hosseini and Sarina Rahmati took bronze.

Since the Taliban’s takeover, Afghan women have been banned from sports, yet Afghan athletes abroad continue to achieve remarkable success.
