EU and UN hold meeting on supporting Afghan women's rights
On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, representatives from the European Union and UN Women met to discuss the growing concerns about the rights of Afghan women and girls under Taliban rule. The meeting addressed the Taliban's systematic discrimination against Afghan women and violations of their human rights.
Adela Raz, former Afghan ambassador to the U.S. and a participant in the meeting, stated that discussions focused on how the international community can better support Afghan women, particularly in areas of business and healthcare.
In a joint statement, the EU and UN expressed deep concern over the restrictions placed on Afghan women, highlighting their limitations in education, employment, and daily life. Both organizations pledged continued support for Afghan women, emphasizing the urgent need for global action.
This comes in the wake of the Taliban's approval of new laws under "Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice", which have severely restricted women's rights, leading to a crisis of repression and gender discrimination in Afghanistan.
