Taliban publicly flogs a woman in Baghlan
The Taliban has publicly flogged a woman in Baghlan province, accusing her of "procuring illicit relationships."
In a statement, the Taliban’s Supreme Court announced that the woman was sentenced to 30 lashes in public for allegedly facilitating sexual relations outside of marriage. Additionally, she was handed a six-month prison sentence by the Taliban’s primary municipal court in Baghlan.
According to the statement, the punishment was carried out in the presence of the municipal court’s head judge, judicial and civil staff, and several local residents.
Since reclaiming power in Afghanistan, the Taliban has intensified the use of corporal punishments, including public lashings, which often target women. These practices have drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and the international community for violating fundamental human rights and international norms.
The Taliban’s continued implementation of such punishments highlights their strict interpretation of Sharia law and raises serious concerns about the deteriorating state of women’s rights and justice in Afghanistan.
