In a high-profile prisoner exchange between the United States and the Taliban, two American citizens, Ryan Corbett and William McKenty, were released in exchange for Khan Mohammad, a senior Taliban member.

According to CNN, the swap took place on Tuesday in Qatar, with Corbett and McKenty returning to Washington. The deal reportedly involved cooperation between national security advisors from both the Biden and Trump administrations and occurred in the final days of President Joe Biden's tenure.

The Taliban confirmed that Khan Mohammad, who had been sentenced to life in a California prison two decades ago on terrorism and drug charges, was freed as part of the exchange.

While U.S. officials previously stated that three Americans were held by the Taliban, CNN reports that George Golzman and Afghan-American Mahmoud Habibi remain in Taliban custody. However, Taliban officials deny holding Habibi.
