Zahra Alami, a young doctor from Afghanistan, has been recognized by the University of Helsinki, Finland, as one of the 30 most talented individuals under 30—a list that includes researchers, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders shaping the future.

Last Thursday, the University of Helsinki released its annual list of 30 promising young figures from various fields. The list features students, researchers, entrepreneurs, social commentators, and experts who are in some way affiliated with the university. Among the 30 honorees, Alami is the only non-European.

In its official announcement, the university stated that the selected individuals were chosen for their active engagement in society and their commitment to making a positive impact in their respective fields and home countries.

Sari Lindblom, President of the University of Helsinki, emphasized that the goal of this initiative is to inspire current and future students to seize academic and professional opportunities to drive meaningful change in society.

Who is Zahra Alami?

Born in 1997, Zahra Alami is a doctor, theorist, and human rights activist from Afghanistan. She graduated from the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Medicine in 2024 and currently works in the emergency care department.

According to the university, Alami actively engages in public discussions on issues like racism and is deeply committed to providing healthcare to migrant patients.

She dreams of working for the United Nations, focusing on healthcare system reforms and women’s rights in developing countries.

When asked about her biggest professional and personal achievement, Alami humbly responded:
"I hope my greatest accomplishments are still ahead of me."

Alami has cited Sima Samar, the renowned Afghan politician, physician, and human rights activist, as her role model.

Her recognition as one of the University of Helsinki’s top young talents highlights the contributions of Afghan professionals on the global stage, despite the challenges they face.
