A group of Afghan diaspora members and women’s rights activists gathered in Hyde Park, London, on 5 July to protest the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan.

The demonstrators called for the immediate reopening of secondary schools and universities for Afghan girls. They also urged the international community to take stronger action in support of Afghan women and girls.

Protesters carried placards and chanted slogans including “Education Is a Right, Not a Privilege,” “Woman, Rights, Freedom,” and “No to the Terrorist Taliban.” They said denying girls access to education violates a fundamental human right.

The demonstration comes as the Taliban continue to face international criticism over their restrictions on women and girls. Afghanistan remains the only country in the world where girls are barred from secondary and higher education.
