OCHA: Economic poverty affects half of Afghanistan’s population
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that economic poverty continues to impact half of Afghanistan's population, with 80% of Afghan families surviving on less than one dollar per person per day. The dire situation underscores the deepening humanitarian crisis in the country.
In a statement published on Thursday, September 5, OCHA highlighted that, eight months into 2024, only 25% of the necessary funds to aid Afghanistan have been secured. The organization stressed the urgent need for more assistance to prevent further deterioration of living conditions for millions of Afghans.
OCHA previously reported that 48% of the population lives below the poverty line, and 12.4% face food insecurity, emphasizing the widespread hardship across the nation. The organization has called for over $3 billion to sustain humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan this year, but to date, only $735 million has been raised.
The economic and food insecurity crisis in Afghanistan continues to worsen, leaving millions in desperate need of aid. OCHA and other international organizations are urging the global community to step up support to alleviate the suffering of Afghan citizens.
